Confidentiality is an essential aspect of counselling and psychotherapy. It contributes greatly to the client’s sense of safety and is one of the things that make the therapeutic relationship different from any other. Counselling and psychotherapy encourages clients to be as open and honest about themselves as possible and inevitably involves clients discussing personal experiences and sensitive information with their therapist. Therefore, it is of paramount importance that the client can trust that what they are disclosing about themselves will remain confidential.
Quay Therapy holds all records securely and will ensure the utmost confidentiality in the treatment of any information held about clients, in line with the BACP Framework for Good Practice and the Data Protection Act.
Extracts from our exchanges in sessions may be used during supervision of our work together, but your identity will not be disclosed.
At the end of therapy, all notes will be stored securely by Quay Therapy for 5 years and subsequently destroyed. No electronic record of your counselling is kept.
All information will be kept confidential unless we agree together to discuss something with a third party. The only reasons for breaking confidentiality would be if I considered that your life was at risk, if another person’s life was at risk or if the I was liable to civil or criminal court proceedings if the information was not disclosed. If at all possible this would be discussed with you beforehand. I am also legally bound to disclose information relating to child abuse or terrorism.
As a professional practitioner I am strongly committed to anti-discrimination. I value difference and diversity and do not discriminate on the grounds of age, gender and gender identity, sexual preference or orientation, marital/partnership status, religion, race, colour, national origin, disability, heritage or political belief.
